The 2005 Game Beginning Of The End For Vols
ByNormally during this week, we recall some of the best games in the history of this series. Naturally, everyone thinks of the 2009 game with the two block field goals by Terrance Cody, but to me maybe the biggest game in the series was the 2005 game under Mike Shula.
The Tide hadn’t beaten the Vols in awhile, Phillip Fulmer was still head coach and news had come out that year that HE was the one that turned in Alabama to the NCAA.
The tension was high in the stadium that day and I remember it as a fan wanting to beat them so badly for all the mess they had caused. Most experts didn’t think the Tide had a chance that day, but mistakes by the Vols and the Bama defense kept them in it until the end.
As UT was going in for what was probably going to be the winning touchdown, running back Arian Foster fumbled the ball out of the endzone which allowed Bama to get the ball back and kick the game winning field goal.
Streak was over, the Tide, which was undefeated at the time, kept their undefeated season and Phillip Fulmer would never step foot again in Bryant-Denny Stadium as Vols head coach-oh what a sweet victory.
Since then, Bama has won five of six from the Vols and is currently on a five game winning streak.
