VIDEO: Bama Outlasts VCU 72-64 – Men’s Basketball Now 7-0!
By
We’ve been waiting all season for the Crimson Tide to be challenged and the VCU Rams gave the Tide all they wanted last night before the Tide wore them down 72-64 moving the Tide’s record to 7-0.
The Tide was lead by JaMycal Green who had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds; an injured Tony Mitchell had 13 points. Mitchell suffered an ankle injury in the Tide’s last Wednesday night in the Tide’s victory over Alabama A & M.
VCU head coach Shaka Smart knew what Green was capable of because he was an assistant on the USA basketball team this summer where he coached Green.
“I tried to explain to our guys the tape doesn't really do justice to how athletic those guys are and how active they are,” said Smart. “Green was a monster tonight. He was terrific."
“It pretty much was like looking in the mirror and playing ourselves,” Green said. “They're a very disruptive team. We couldn't run our offense the first half but the second half we executed better and just had more focus.
VCU at one point in the second half was up on Bama by as many as six points, but a 12-5 run to close out the game, did in the Rams..
Anthony Grant praised his former team for giving it their all in the game, but said it was the Tide defense that really was the key to victory.
“During the last four or five minutes of the game, our guys really stepped it up on the defensive end.”
The Tide’s next opponent will be Big East giant Georgetown Thursday night in Tuscaloosa.
