Tide Players and Coaches Have Not Forgotten Last Year’s Collapse
By“Never Again” is a motto that the Alabama football team has lived with this season. The “Never Again” came from Tide’s loss last year to Auburn.
“I think to everybody that played in that game, it’s something that we’ll remember for the rest of our lives,” said center William Vlachos.
Alabama got off to a great start last year in the Iron Bowl and led then No. 1 Auburn 24-7 at the half, but then the wheels came off.
It became one of the greatest victories in Auburn history and one of the worst defeats in Alabama history. The comeback was one of the biggest in the series history and still a painful memory that lived on during the offseason for most Bama players and coaches.
“We played some of the best football we played, and they came all the way back on us,” Richardson said. “They went on to win the championship.”
“When you have a team that wins a national championship, whether it’s ours or theirs, they have that kind of competitive spirit,” Saban said. “You tell your players at halftime that they’re not going to go away and you’ve got to get ready for the barrage of what’s going to happen and you’ve got to sort of survive the flurries. They did a better job in the second half than we did.
Now, the tables are turned and the Tide is back in the driver’s seat for the national championship this year, but memories of last year still haunt the Tide.
“It always stays in your head, said Richardson.
