Tide Won Puerto Rico Classic Convincingly, Looking Ahead to Big Season
ByAlabama finished up their business trip with a victory over Purdue 65-56 to win the Puerto Rico Classic Sunday. Unlike the beginning of last season when the Tide was 0-3 in the Virgin Islands, this team had no problem handling its opponents. Now Alabama is 5-0 and looking forward to a big season with a possible NCAA tournament run.
In winning the Puerto Rico Classic, the Tide defeated Maryland, Wichita State and Purdue, all very good basketball teams. Trevor Releford led the team with 20 points, while JaMychal Green and tournament MVP Tony Mitchell both added 14 points; Mitchell also had 10 rebounds.
In each of the Tide’s victories, Mitchell scored 17, 26 and 14 points. The last time the Tide won a tournament was in 2007 when they won a tournament out in Las Vegas.
The Tide’s defense was again impressive holding the Boilermakers to 36 percent shooting.
"I thought Alabama's pressure and their guards really hit us hard,” said Purdue head coach Matt Painter.
And even though the Tide won the tournament, Anthony Grant realizes his team still has a ways to go.
“We, as a team, understand that we have time to progress and get better,” Grant said. "We understand that we haven't scratched the surface of where we could be.”
The Tide will have a short holiday as they face Alabama A & M Wednesday and Grant’s former team VCU Sunday night.
Meanwhile, check out this monster dunk by Mitchell. It is very athletic.
