Coach Saban talked today to the press about the Alabama football team after the first practice sessions. He said they had a "really good" first practice with mostly older guys. The two sessions were split into 2 groups, but the groupings had nothing to do with seniority or depth chart. The groups were split up for organizational purposes so that the number of players can be well balanced at every position.

He went on the offensive against the media (at least those who were "unprofessional") in reporting injuries. I am assuming he is referring to the false reports of an Eddie Lacy injury by the news bloggers. He also talked about the expectations being created "externally" in the media about the team, and he said that the results will be determined by what we do... not by what we "can do". It means about as much as going to the fortune teller to read the future.

He then compared fall camp once again to final examinations. Fall practice is the time where the evaluations of the off-season work will determine who plays in the fall.

Coach Saban had glowing things to say about DeAndrew White. Coach Saban said White was "very impressive in practice today". White was the Ozzie Newsome Most Improved Freshman Award winner in 2011 spring practice and could be a rising star with good size and speed at wide receiver. He now has the kind of maturity that he needs to compete for the job. If he is as good as billed, watch out Duron Carter. Its the perfect opportunity for a new WR after the loss of Julio Jones to the NFL. DeAndrew White is fast becoming a name consistently being dropped by Coach Saban.

Depth is not an issue on the OL, but how the lineup shakes out is to be determined; however there is room for new guys to make a contribution. The same scenario is occurring on the defensive line. There are plenty of opportunities for new players to excel and compete to play.

Brent Calloway completed what he needed to complete and was expected for the evening session. Duron Carter did not start yet due to verification issues delaying the enrollment, but he is expected to get clearance to start soon. Danny Woodson, Jr is not there, but is expected be there sometime before school starts.
